[86964] Samuel was a doctor in Galveston, Texas from around 1851 up to the time of his death. He was killed on Oct. 6, 1862 during the Confederate Army's evacuation of Galveston. Philip C. Tucker Jr., a close friend, gave the following written account to his son Philip Tucker III about 20 years later:

"The large force at the disposal of Commodore Eagle caused this demand [for the surrender of Galveston] to be considered fully and it was determind by the Confederate authorities to abandon the city, which was done on the 6th when a grand stampede of military and citizens for the mainland and Houston occurred, during which chaos reigned; as evening approached, train after train pulled out for Houston loaded with refugees and their household effects. The only serious accident that occurred during this stampede was the killing of Dr. S.B. Hurlbut just before the last train pulled out for Houston. He had placed his family on board and was standing upon the platform when an altercation occurred between a soldier, and an officer, and the sentinel guarding the train, during which several shots were fired, one of them entering his brain, causing instant death. There were some three hundred people upon the platform of the station, yet the bullet passed entirely through without touching one of them and struck him as he stood at the outer edge. His body was removed to the office of the Gas Works nearby, and afterwards to his residence, from which it was escored next day by Harmony Lodge No. 6 of Free Masons, of which he was a member, to his grave in the Episcopal cemetery."
Philip C. Tucker Jr., history of Galveston [handwritten manuscript], Philip C. Tucker III Collection, Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Hurlbut's wife was Mary C. Seymour. The Texas Grand Lodge confirms that he was a Mason and a member of Harmony Lodge in Galveston. He also ran the first non-military public hospital in Texas (Galveston city hospital).
