INDEX

[73991] He lost his parents when not much over six years of age, and he assures that he was 'bound out', not long after his fathers death, and it should be concluded that he received indifferent treatment to use a mild term. He wrote that he never left his masters home until he was 20 years old, and said he 'bare-headed, bare-footed, and without education, and green as any gourd I started.' But the young man had great intelligence, activity and industry, and success attended his efforts. From the slight advantages of his boyhood, he won his way as a farm hand, a boatman, a clock-peddler, a hotel-keeper, a merchant and farmer. He met with a severe loss through the misdeeds of his partner in business, but his good character brought him friends to his rescue, and was soon enabled to regain his feet. He prominently identified with the growth of McArthur, Ohio. He held office in the military of the state, and for more than 40 years was a worthy member of the Methodist Church. Besides the son listed below, there were five other children, of which five were daughters. (HG p 244)

[73989] May have been born on the 24th.

[83134] Gordon Harley Hurlbert's Family

[83135]

[83136] Gordon was born in Kelley's Cove, (Yarmouth?) Nova Scotia and moved with his family to the Pennsylvania while he was quite young. Mabel was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and was sent live with her Aunt Emma Robinson in Pittsburgh by her father. He felt it was necessary because of the poor treatment given her by his wife, her step-mother. She attended Carnegie Tech and studied millinery, the craft of hat making.

[83137]

[83138] Gordon and Mabel were married in 1911 and their son was born in 1913. After working as a floor walker in the Joseph Horn Department store, he worked as a wholesale shoe salesman. Eventually moving to Cleveland Ohio to work in the department store that his brother Charles worked in. He returned to Pittsburgh by 1929 and worked on WPA during the depression years. The family moved to Virginia and lived in the log house that their son Don had built before he moved to Minnesota. While in Virginia the entire family worked in Ft. Belvoir.

[83139]

[83140] The family moved to Bemidji, Minnesota, in 1947. After moving to Minnesota, they moved a number of times to location near Bemidji. Eventually, they bought a small farm ten miles southeast of Bemidji near the S curve. This residence was shared by both families. Gordon died while living there.

[83141]

[83142] Gordon finished his career in real estate sales. He enjoyed membership in the Mason Lodge. Mabel worked in the Maid-Rite Cafe before retirement. After his death, Mabel and Ted moved from the farm to Nymore on Wood Avenue. They lived there until Mabel went to the nursing home where she died. At that time, Ted moved Northland Apartments.

INDEX

[70327] He was a farmer and occupied lands which were formerly a part of his fathers estate, upon the east side of the river in Chatham now Portland, and was living there in 1708 and 1720. When he died, in East Haddam, he may have been living with his daughter Abigail (Mrs Elijah White) whose home was there. The inscription in the oldest burying ground in the town, gives his age, in error, as 87 years. (HG)
