INDEX

[124] Charles left his own account: 'My parents Ebenezer and Betsy Miner lived with her parents till I was in my seventh year, and her father having a large family and under low circumstances, my family sent me to live with my grandfather where I lived nearly three years. My grandfather being out of health and unabale to manage his business, moved to his son-in-law Manassas Leith in New London, at which time I returned to my parents, remained a few months and in the spring of 1772, being in the 10th year of my age, went to live with Mr. Moses Noyes where I lived for 5 years and returned to my parents.
I tarried a few days and then went to live with Mr. Seth Lee at Lyme. With my father's concent, I agreed to live with him until I was 21 years of age. I served him faithfully except so much of the time I was in the Continental Service 1780. I was drafted into the State Service to go to Horse Neck for three months; and not liking to go to the State Service I enlisted into the Continential Service for six months under Lieut. Jcbabod Spencer and marched to the headquarters of General Washington's Army, which then lay at The Fishkill in New York State and then joined Col. Stow's Regiment, Huntington's Brigade in The 7th Company commanded by Richard Sill of Lyme, Conn., and served the full time of six months, and was discharged with honor --
returned to my old master, worked with him until September 1781, when the British came into New London and burnt the majority of the town, and the alarm was given and the militia was called out in to Town, and I for one, and, these were drafted for two months; served the time out and returned to my old master's again and worked with him till spring, 1782; and then I enlisted into the Continental Service for six months - - served my country that campaign very agreeably, got my discharge and went back to my master's house. On Christmas Day, joined my comrades in the diversion of shooting squirrels. It was a sorrowful day . . . our amoneshon was gone and we cut down the tree where the squirrel was; it fell and broke another which fell on me. It broke several bones and I was confined to the house about five months.
In the time of my apprenticeship I became acquainted with a young woman and soon after my time ran out with my master, I married her.'

[137881] Charles and Rachel 'went out on the search for cheap land. They went from Lyme, Conn., on horseback with their goods tied to the pillion of the saddle, their only trail an uncertain route and bridle path by blazed trees. They arrived in The Colony of New Hampshire 1 October 1784 and pitched first in Lempster, N. H. where the first two children were born. Soon after, they moved about three miles away and there reared a family of ten children.
Their first house was of logs. Charles cut the logs in the woods, fastened a chain around them, put a stick in the hands of his young son, Benajah Ames, to drive them to the place of deposit. Being too young to unhook the chains, his mother did so and headed the team back for the woods again and so grew up the house.
Charles died at Lempster, N.H. 24 May 1840. Rachel, his widow, went to live with her son, Ezra, at Walpole, N.H., where she had in her possession the original walking staff of Thomas Minor. The family noted that 'there is a strip of Buckskin through it to hang it by about 1/4 inch wide, said to have been there when it came. It has been handed down from generation to generation and at this writing, September 16th 1881 is the property of widow Lydia Miner, releck of Gardner Miner, deceased of Weston, Mass.'
Thomas' walking staff was last in the possession of Donald Miner, great, great, grandson of Charles and Rachel Miner who, on 18 November 1973, presented it to The Old Lighthouse Museum in Stonington, Conn. where it is currently on display.' Thomas Minor Descendants, p. 124.
