[86180] p. 87, Dartmouth College Sketches and Class History 1853-1895, Moses T. Runnels, Class Secretary, 1895, Newport NH, Barton & Wheeler, possession of Shirley Lewis.
In 1886 went to Korea to help establish western education. Returned in 1888 to marry May Hanna and then returned to Korea. He stayed until 1907 when the Japanese took over and though out the Americans. His Tombstone in Korea reads; "I'd rather be buried in Korea than in Westminster Abby". (Judith Blague Adams-Shoreham, NY.)

Hulbert came to Korea in 1886, one of three young Americans hired by King Kojong to teach English in the Royal English School.

During his stay in Korea until 1907, Hulbert gained knowledge about Korean culture and history. The king even entrusted him with special state messages pleading for foreign assistance against Japan in 1905 to then U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and in 1907 to the Hague Conference held in the Netherlands.

He again visited Korea in 1949 at the invitation of then South Korean President Syngman Rhee, but died in Korea at the age of 86, worn out from the long journey.

His simple memorial at Yanghwajin, a cemetery for foreigners in Hapchong-dong, northwestern Seoul, reads, ``I would rather be buried in Korea than in Westminster Abbey. http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200503/kt2005032417175210230.htm

[73057] It is understood that the family moved from Southampton, Mass. to Pennsylvania, about 1820. (HG p435) After her marriage to Lemuel Lucore, they lived in Westfield for a time, by 1810 census they were in Southampton, Mass., and by 1820 census in McLean Co., Pa. as a widow. Supposedly came to McLean Co., Pa. in 1816 or 1818 (Cameron County history varies). The story told by Rufus to his wife was they had come to Pa. via the Black River country, which was where Lemuel Lucore's parents had moved about 1801. They visited in Jefferson and Lewis County, NY., came down through New York, visiting other relatives on the way (there were Lachores in Yates and Niagara Counties, New York) to Pa. In 1840-41. Rizpah's son, Rufus, rode from Iowa to Pa. by horse, back to get his mother and bring her back to Iowa where he had settled with his family in Linn County in 1839. She evidently was educated and/or believed in education as her sons could read, write, knew some law and were well educated for the times. She died at the home of her son, Rufus, on his farm near Marion, Iowa in 1852.

[73058]

[144776] IGI file says she may have been married in Southampton, Hampshire, Mass.
Mary J. Ameson says she was married 22 Oct. 1796, Westfield, Mass.
