Wilts., and born in or about 1548-9, as his elder brother, James, was born in 1547, according to the tombstone, married, in 1573, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Oxford, of Bratton, Westbury Hundred, Wiltshire, and had one son, 1. Richard, born in November, 1574, of whom presently, At the time of the collection of subsidy in Wiltshire in 1609, RICHARD HULBERT was taxed,, in goods: xij. li. xij.s., a very large sum of money for the period. RICHARD HULBERT died before May 9, 1619, as we find that a messuage, late in the possession of RICHRD HULBERT, deceased, was then claimed by one John Mynty. Page 35 IV. Robert, son of Robert and Elizabeth Hulbert, was buried Dec 6 1651. ii. Joseph, son of Robert and Elizabeth Hulbert, married May James and had a son: a. Christian, b. Mar 5 1683, in St. George, Bloomsbury, Mdx., who married, in St. Antholin, Thomas Baldwin [as Christian Holbert] Mar 7 1736. Page 41 7. Mary, b. Apr 7 1618, married JAMES HULBERT, clothier, of Corsham, Wilts., her cousin. She died Jun 23 1648, and he died Apr 5 a653, both interred in Corsham. See page 33 for descendants. RICHARD HULBERT died Sep 19 1637, and administration was issued to JOHN HULBERT, the third son, the two eldest, Walter and Thomas, and the younger son, William, having emigrated previously to the New World, probably to join relatives there, residing in all parts of New England. V. THOMAS HULBERT born Mar 26 1610, by occupation a blacksmith, is believed to have been related to Justice George Hurlbert, who had a grant of arms in Mar 1639, a tradition of little value in itself, but Page 42 of some interest, when it becomes known that the said GEORGE HULBERT, whose ancestry will be found on page 18, a son of WILLIAM HULBERT, on page 15, who was a brother of RICHARD HULBERT, on pages 3,34, father of RICHARD HULBERT on page 35, was cousin of the latter's children, Walter, Thomas and William, of whom Thomas Hurlbut's biography will be found on the preceeding page. It is possible that he came over in the same ship as Lyon Gardner, the "Batcheler" from London 10 Aug 1635; the ship list does not give more the name of said Gardner, his wife Mary, Eliza Coles, their maid servant, and Wm. Jope., while the ship, undoubtedly, carried more passengers. The Earl of Warwick, on Mar 19 1631 had granted a patent to Sir Richard Saltonstall, Richard Knightly, John Pyn, John Hampden, John Humphrey, and Herbert Pelham of a tract of land in the new settlement. To develop this fertile land and to erect suitable buildings the grantees engaged a number of artisans, carpenters, blacksmiths, etc. Page 43 New settlers were in every way encouraged, land was cheap, frequently entirely free, employment was assured, and this, in connection with many relatives in the new settlement, undoubtedly induced THOMAS HULBERT to emigrate. The close friendship that existed between him and Lyon Gardner has led to the conclusion that they may have come over together, and that they were acquainted before the emigration. Considering the times, and the fact that relatives and friends were given preference in matters of trust and employment, it is not impossible, but even plausible that Lion Gardner was in some way related to the Robert Gardner, master of the ship "Hope", who carried wine to New England for Richard Bennett, of Henry Bennett, whose wife, Hannah (Bennet) was a niece of Abigail (Hulbert) Partidge, sister of THOMAS HULBERT. Page 44 THOMAS HULBERT settled at Saybrook, Conn., went afterwards to Wethersfield, Conn., was wounded in the Pequot War, 1637, and had with wife, Sarah, several children, of whom John was born Mar 8 1642, etc. For his descendants, see the American Genealogy of the family. HENRY CARLTON HULBERT (one of his descendants) born in Lee, Mass., Dec 19 1831, son of Amos Geer Hulbert*, son of John Hulbert, son of the above THOMAS HULBERT, the immigrant, married, first, 13 Sep 1854, Susan R. Cooley, Lee, Mass., who died Aug 22 1882; and secondly, Oct 16 1884, Fannie Dwight Bigelow.
