(continued from Part 1) II. WILLIAM HULBERT (or HURLBATT), "son of JOHN HURLBATT", of Farnham, Co. Surrey, was "aged 59" in 1549, hence born in the year 1490, of "Poltsholte", Wiltshire [Poulshot] in 1579, having married a daughter of ....Burley of Poulshot, Co. Wilts., gent. By an indenture of Dec. 14, 1579, 22 Elizabeth, between John Eyre of Great Chaldfeld, Co. Wilts., Esq., one of the party [i.e., party of the first part], and John Daunteseye of West Lavington, esq., George Burleigh [Burley] of Wysley in Page 13 Potterne, esq., John Hampton of East Lavington, gent., Richard Burleigh of Whysley, son and heir of said George Burleigh, and WILLIAM HULBERTT of POLTSHOLTE, gent., of the other party, witnesseth, that the said John Eyre, in consideration of a marriage solemnized between him and Elizabeth, now his wife, daughter of Richard Dauntesye, gent., deceased, and also in consideration of a full satisfaction to be made to the said Elizabeth of her jointure and dower of all the manors, lands, and chattels of the said John Eyre in Co. Wilts. or elsewhere, hath given, granted to the said John Dauntesey, George Burleigh, John Hampton, Richard Burleigh, and WILLIAM HULBERTT, all that capital messuage and all those his lands, tenements, meadows, leases, pastures, rents, etc. in the fields of Wedhampton. Co. Wilts., water gist mill called Este Crooke Page 14 mill, and lands in Urshefonta, Allcanninges and Fullwaye, to the use of the said John Eyre and Elizabeth heirs Signed by WILLEM HULBERT, and the others; seisin delivered Nov. 25, 1580. Amongst the Jewer Grants and Certificates of Arms, in March 1639, is to be found the following arms, borne by the Corsham, Wiltshire family "descended from WILLIAM HULBERT, D.D., living in Hants. [Hampshire] , at the time of his being "Chamberlain to King Edward VI (who reigned from 1547-1553), having married a daughter of Burley of Poulshot, Wilts., esq.": Per cross ar. and sa., on a bend of the second three annulets of the first, in the 2d and 3d quarter a lion ramp. or. Page 15 WILLIAM HULBERT and .... Burley, his wife, had issue: 1. JOHN of Sheldon, Hampshire, [situated a few miles south of Odiham and Balingstroke, Hants., and some eight miles southwest of Farnham, Surrey]. He married AVIS, daughter of John HUNT, of Renthworth, Co. Southhampton [Hampshire], and bore the arms as blazoned on page 4. 2. JAMES, of whom presently, [page 21]. 3. RICHARD, resided at Bratton, Co. Wilts., in 1609 when he appears in a Lay Subsidy Roll od 7 Jas. I as being taxed "in goods: RICHARD HULBERT, xij li xij s." 4. WILLIAM, of Hamble, Co. Hants., who married JOANNE, daughter of John SMITH of Corsham, Co. Wilts., and had issue. WILLIAM HULBERT obtained through his father-in-laws' influence the post of customer [i.e. Page 16 collector of customs] at the port of Bristol, Gloucestershire, (not very far distant from Corsham, Wilts.), and on May 16th, 1593, WILLIAM HULBERT, in a letter to Lord Brughley, relates that "By his favour he had obtained ten years since 1583 the customer's place inwards at the port of Bristol, but being unable, through infirmity, to perform service, wishes to resign in favour of John Dowlie, his near kinsman, recommended by the mayor and some of the aldermen; will yield 100 angels [an ancient English coin of the value of 10s. sterling] for his lordships' favor therein: i. WILLIAM, ob. sine prole. ii. MATTHEW, occurs frequently as on jury at Page 17 inquisitiones post mortem, Wilts. He married a daughter of Robert CHAMPION of Westerleigh, Co. Glouc. and proved his will Febr. 14, 1632/3, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. iii.NICHOLAS HULBERT, of Alton Barnes, Wilts., married Oct. 29, 11627, JOANNE PLUMMER, and had a son, a. OLIVER HULBERT, of Bath Abbey, Somerset, whose children were baptized there, when his name was written HULBERT, HULLBET, HULBIRD, HULBURD, and HUBBARD. iv. ROBERT, who married, in St. Dionis Backchurch, Page 18 London, April 17, 1597, ELIZABETH COBHAM, and had: a. OWEN HURLBUTT, bapt. Jan. 25, 1606, "son of ROBERT HULBERT." On the register occurs the name of ROBERT HULBERT, victualler, whose wife was buried there Sept. 10, 1665. . A son JOHN, bapt. May 22, 1664, son of ROBERT HULBERT, bur, Febr. 5, 1665. v. GEORGE, of St. Martin in the Fields, London, Page 19 where HULBERTS was buried Apr. 9, 1618. Peter Heyword and GEORGE HULBERT, Justices of the Peace of Westminster, in a letter to the Council stated that "they had viewed all the brewhouses in Westminster and their provision of coals..., as appears from a State Paper, Domestic, Charles I, of Febr. 2, 1636/7. In Febr. 1638/9 there is a Certificate of John Borough, Garter King of Arms, confirming certain arms Page 20 to GEORGE HULBERT of St. Martin in the Fields, near London, one of the justices of peace of Westminster, and President of the Military Company exercising arms in St. Martin parish." [The "arms" confirmed were, of course, the armorial bearings of the family.] GEORGE HULBERT's will, of parish St. Martin in the Field, Middlesex, was proved Oct 30, 1639, by relict Martha. Testator relates that after July 23 he began to write his name FULBERT. vi. HENRY, who as HENRICUS HULBORTE married, at Westmeon, Hampshire, on Jan 1, 1622, MARIAM MOORE. He resided in 1641 at Bratton, Wiltshire, paying a Page 21 subsidy tax of 10s. as part of the collection of L400,000 granted to Charles I. Although this | He and his wife, ANNE, were buried in Langley appears at this | Burrell, Wilts., monumental inscription: position in the | document, it | "Here lies the body of ANN, late wife of must belong | WILLIAM HULBERT who was born the 11 day of 12 elsewhere | mo. 1670." | | "Here lies the body of WILLIAM HULBERT, of the | same place, who died Sept. 23, 1712, age 90 | years and 5 months." vii.EDWARD, who married at St. Mary, Marlborough, Wilts., June 23, 1623, EDITH WALDRON. (Before we continue the descent of RICHARD HULBERT, the descendants of JAMES HULBERT will be given) 2. JAMES HULBERT born, according to tombstone, in Corsham, Page 22 Wilts., later on referred to about 1547", son of WILLIAM HULBERT, D.D., Chamberlain to King Edward VI, and a BURLEY, of Poulshot, Wilts., his wife, married ANNE, daughter of JOHN SMITH, of Corsham, Wilts., eldest son of THOMAS SMITH, customer "of England." He was a "clothier", residing at Easton, within the parish of Corsham, Wilts., and appears to have led an uneventful life. He had (one daughter) and two sons: 1. ANN born 1573, (m. Rich H????). 2. JOHN, "the eldest", born in 1576, died Sept. 3, 1626, having married MARGARET, daughter of ROGER CHILFORD, of Comberford, with whom he had two sons: i. JAMES. ii. JOHN, who married, at St. Peter, Marlborough, Wilts., Nov. 27, 1620, CATHERINE PYK. JOHN HULBERT frequently occurs as a juryman at various inquisitions post mortem, in 1635, generally held at Marlborough. Page 23 3. THOMAS HULBERT, "born in 1577", according to tombstone in Corsham, married ELIZABETH, daughter of THOMAS WALLIS, of Trowbridge, Wilts. In the Corsham church are the following inscriptions: "JOHN and THOMAS HULBERT, of the Town of Corsham, Clothiers, ye sonne of JAMES HULBERT, of Easton within the parish, Clothier, deceased: JOHN the eldest age 49 happily exchanged this life ye 3d of Sept. 1626: THOMAS ye younger age 53 finished his course ye 16th of October 1632: of whose powerful prayers unto God and most Christin departure was witnessed with many others yt were then likewise present: Page 24 "Two brothers near interred here doe lye, Whose love to each, whose trade, whose charitye, whose zeal to God, whose truth to all was such; As they secund one, of all admired much. JOHN was the eldest, a man discreete, and stoutly, Faithful and just in all he went about, By seniority he first obtained, The blessed Port, that THOMAS since hath gained. THOMAS was endowed with such rare parts. He no wages needed to be taught the arts: And though he kept him to his trade in cloth, Yet was he devine, and a Courtyer both. A father strict, yet leader o're his Childe, A loving Neighbor, and a Master milde, Who never did ye needy more contemne, And God enricht him by ye hands of thence. Each like to other in ye choisest parts, Each brothers prayer speaks the other his desarts, O're whose dust doeth this monument remain, Scarce two such brothers hath ye world againe. Page 25 "Sir Edward Hungerford, knight, of ye Honorable Order of ye Bath, and ye Sheriff of the county of Wilts., hath caused this to be erected in memory of those brothers." -------------------------------------------------------------- The remainder of page 25 and all of page 26 is not copied here since they contain asides about the Hungerford family and their emigration to New England. -------------------------------------------------------------- Page 27 On a brass-plate, with the arms: Qua.ar. and sa. on a bend three lions passant gules, with Crest: A lion's head er.gu. langued az. is the following inscription: "In memory of members of the family of HULBERT of this parish [Corsham], many of whome lie buried in the vaults beneath, and whose recording tombstones were covered over on the restoration of this Church in 1878: "JAMES HULBERT, of Easton, born about 1547, left issue two sons: JOHN, born in 1576, died March 1626 THOMAS born in 1577, who married ELIZABETH WALLIS, died the 16th of October 1632 having had issue two sons and six daughters [there were three sons, as we shall see] of whom JAMES HULBERT was born in 1614 and died April 5, 1653, leaving a son [there were two sons as we shall see] THOMAS HULBERT of Easton who married April 22d, Page 28 1679, CATHERINE, eldest daughter of THOMAS LONG, of Monkton and Rowden, Wilts., and had issue 4 children ELIZABETH, ROBERT, JOHN THOMAS, of whom THOMAS HULBERT of Easton and Wooton Bassett was born in 1680, and married CATHERINE GALLIMORE, and died Jan. 16, 1743 leaving issue two sons, THOMAS and JOHN, and two daughters, of whom THOMAS HULBERT, M.D., of Newbury, Berks, married LUCY CHURCH and had two daughters LUCY, born in 1743, died Jan. 20, 1840 and ELIZABETH, born 1746, died Dec. 17, 1819 JOHN HULBERT of Corsham, born in 1713, who married MARY SMITH, of Rowdon House, Chippenham, and died June 2, 1799, leaving issue 5 children namely i. CATHERINE, who married John Hart, whose daughter/Mary Sophia, married John Swayne of Wilton/ ii. JOHN GALLIMORE HULBERT, born in 1741, who married Page 29 Elizabeth Kington, of Stowell, Wilts. and died Dec. 19, 1801; iii. ROBERT HULBERT, of Frome, who died July 1794; iv. JANE, born Oct 8, 1739, who married Richard Hill, of Pickwick, and died May 20, 1817, and v. Mary, who married Richard Prior, of Halse,Som., and Sydenham, Kent, and died Jan. 1, 1828, leaving four surviving children; of whom her eldest daughter Mary Prior, born June 1, 1770, married Richard Hayward/Alexander of Corsham, and died Dec. 10, 1866, leaving issue/ 2 sons and 1 daughter, who restored this church in 1878, namely/ Richard Chandler Alexander of Highworth/, and Mary Anne, who married Gabriel Goldney, M.P. of Beech/field, Corsham, the lay rector of this parish." * On the floor is a brass plate with the inscription: "Here resteth ye body of THOMAS HULBERT of this Page 30 town/of Corsham, Clotthier, who aged 53 Christianly finished his course/with powerful prayer to God upon Tuesday being ye 16 of Oct. 1632. He espoused ELIZABETH ye daughter of THOMAS WALLIS of Trowbridge, Clothier, by whom he had issue ANNE, ELIZABETH, and THOMAS who deceased before him; BRIDGET, who married to Wm. Sheraton of Bromelea, gent., SUSAN, who married John Hallidaye, in Co. Glouc., Clothier, JAMES, ELIZABETH, and MARY, all five yet living to testify their father's piety and care of them." [On the monument, erected by Rev. Goldney, previously mentioned, only two sons of THOMAS HULBERT and six daughters, are mentioned, of whom one, JAMES, is mentioned by name. On the above mentioned brass the name of six daughters occur, the son JAMES, and a son THOMAS, who died before his father. Amongst the Jewer Grants and Certificates of arms, from Stowe Page 31 MS., showing the pedigree of the Hulberts of Corsham, descended from WILLIAM HULBERT, who married a BURLEY, of Poulshot, Wilts., it is stated that the names of THOMAS HULBERT AND ELIZABETH WALLIS's sons were named JAMES and RICHARD HULBERT, while their tombstone, previously referred to , give their names as JAMES and THOMAS, deceased, which is correct, "all five yet living to testify, etc", as we find above. RICHARD HULBERT, given in the Stowe MS. as son of THOMAS and ELIZABETH was ??????son of WILLIAM HULBERT and his wife, a BURLEY, of Poulshot, and a brother of JAMES HULBERT, see page [15]. JAMES HULBERT, son of THOMAS and ELIZABETH WALLIS HULBERT, and born in 1614, married MARY, daughter of RICHARD HULBERT, his cousin. She died June 23, 1648. He died April 5, 1653. JAMES HULBERT, clothier, sold to Michael Titcomb Page 32 land in Escott, held of the king by knight's fee, and worth 8s. per annum." In the Corsham, Wilts. church is a monument, with this inscription, and arms: "Sa. a cross between four leopards faces jessant de lys or impaling erm. a bend gu. for Wallis." [Same arms as the Farnham, Surrey line, given on page [11]., the original armorial bearings of the family.] "Here lieth one benea????????????ttle tomb, Inclosed in's fathers grave, and mother's womb [sic] If thee a stranger be, and shalt desire To know or who or what he was, Enquire The common country will as those passe, But most the poor acquaint thee what he was, And all will tell he was one who di'd (Except himself) too soone for all beside, Page 33 And if a neighbor all that thou shalt have From me is only this, here is the grave Of such a one, whose name when thou shall leave, Thou'lt say that that's enough, I may forbear. "Here lies the body of JAMES HULBERT Gent. who departed this life the 5th day of April 1633 aged 39." JAMES HULBERT had issue, 1. THOMAS, whose descendants are mentioned on the tombstone on Corsham church [see page 28], and according to Howard, William, of Ridgeside, parish of Corsham, whose wife Elina was buried there June 6, 1722. He died at Corsham May 6, and was buried May 20, 1713, leaving issue: i. William, bt at Corsham, Febr 3, 1705, died at Bristol, Dec 1785, having had issue, with wife, Wyatt: a. Ann, married in Salisbury, Jan 2, 1782, Wm. Sheppard. b. William, b. Jan. 2, 1741, o.s.p. and three daughters. (continued in Part 3)
